And This Our Life: Observing Matisse

Children at the MoMA observing Matisse

One of my favorite things to do with my children is to take them to the great museums and cultural institutions of New York City. I am not much of one of taking straight-up pictures of a work of art, but I really love capturing images of my children interacting, observing and being affected by the art we see.

My favorite art museum is the Museum of Modern Art, which, in addition to offering a delicious Lambrusco on their cafe menu= is very kid-friendly. Plus, like, the art. My son is especially keen on the audio guides they provide. He zooms around the museum in search of art work that is included in the kids audio guide and learns that Jackson Pollack painted while listening to jazz music, Piet Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie was inspired by the New York City subway, and Matisse’s studio was, in fact, not really red.

I am drawn to capturing images that are clean, light, and minimalist.
